2024 ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum held in Shandong

The 2024 ASEAN-China Media Cooperation Forum was held on Friday in Dezhou, eastern China's Shandong province.

The event, titled "Amity and Innovation Matter for a Shared Future," brought together more than 150 guests, including government officials, diplomats from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and media professionals, to discuss ways to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between media agencies in China and ASEAN countries.

In his speech, Du Zhanyuan, president of China International Communications Group (CICG), noted the need for joint efforts from Chinese and ASEAN media, including CICG, to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future. He called for further cooperation to promote shared values, foster people-to-people exchanges, and encourage youth participation, so as to contribute to human progress and global development.

Lauding the forum as a valuable opportunity to expand communication and cooperation, Lao Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Phosy Keomanyvong said that Laos aims to work closely with other ASEAN members and ASEAN dialogue partners like China to enhance regional connectivity and prosperity. As the rotating chair of ASEAN this year, Laos has officially launched the tourism promotion campaign "Visit Laos Year 2024," expecting to attract international visitors to the country, the deputy minister said.

Shi Zhongjun, secretary-general of the ASEAN-China Centre, said that the center has been committed to promoting media exchanges and cooperation over the years. He suggested that Chinese and ASEAN media should act as bridges and windows for cooperation, focus on presenting cooperation achievements in green development, the digital economy, governance, and poverty reduction, and tell the stories of social and economic development to the world.

The ASEAN-China Initiative on Jointly Promoting People-to-People Exchanges Through Media Cooperation was also released at the forum, calling for strengthened collaboration in building connectivity, fostering strategic partnerships, enhancing media technology, and creating a media cooperation network.

The second Image Possibilities Coproduction Plan was introduced during the forum to encourage Chinese and international filmmakers to collaborate on documentaries about China in the new era through film.

In addition, media professionals from China and ASEAN countries discussed the media's roles in enhancing people-to-people ties and explored innovative ways of development in the media industry.

This year marks the China-ASEAN Year of Cultural Exchange, which highlights the role of media in fostering cultural exchange and mutual trust. Established in 2018, the China-ASEAN Media Cooperation Forum has become a significant platform for media exchange and a testament to China-ASEAN friendship.
