Symposium held to celebrate 20th anniversary of CATTI

A symposium was held in Beijing on Friday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch of the China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI).

The event was attended by more than 200 guests, including officials from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, leaders of China International Communications Group (CICG), as well as representatives from the exam administration agencies, experts, and examinees.

Du Zhanyuan, president of CICG, delivered a speech at the symposium. He said that CICG has actively promoted the development of translation testing and identified a large number of highly skilled translators and interpreters in various languages over the past 20 years.

He said that, as an important part of the national system for evaluating translators and interpreters, the CATTI should adhere to the national strategy of opening up and align itself with the strategic needs of the nation. He called for further efforts to enhance its management and service to effectively guide the standardization of the translation industry.

At the event, new members were announced for CATTI expert committees in eight languages and its university promotion committee. The eight languages tested in the CATTI are English, Japanese, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Arabic, and Korean.

During the event, 70 experts were awarded for their outstanding contributions to the development of the CATTI.

Huang Youyi, former vice president of CICG, shared his insights and experiences regarding the translation test. He said that the CATTI has played a significant role in identifying and nurturing translation talents, and that it has facilitated translation education to better serve the national development strategy. 

As of now, the CATTI tests have received nearly 2.2 million applications, and 240,000 certificates have been granted. The exam has become a major national occupational qualification test.
