2023 National Translation Technology Contest concludes

The inaugural National Translation Technology Contest concluded Friday with an awards ceremony in Dalian, Liaoning province. Held by China International Communications Group (CICG) and its affiliates and partners, the awards ceremony featured a seminar on innovative translation practices and education models in the digital era.

Gao Anming, vice president of CICG and executive vice president and secretary-general of the Translators Association of China (TAC), and Liu Hong, president of Dalian University of Foreign Languages and vice president of TAC, delivered speeches at the awards ceremony and presented the awards to the winners. Award-winning contestants, distinguished coaches, and representatives of outstanding organizers were in attendance.

Gao stressed the strategic importance of embracing new technologies and opportunities to enhance China's translation capability and international communication efficiency. 

He called upon the translation industry to focus on national strategic needs so as to continuously enhance China's international presence. He also underscored the importance of promoting the application of new technologies in the translation industry and deepening collaboration among various sides to promote the digital shift of translation education.

During the event, the Academy of Translation and Interpretation (ATI) under CICG signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Dalian University of Foreign Languages. The Plan for Enhancing International Communication and Translation Literacy in the Digital Age was also released during the event. Additionally, Pengcheng Laboratory in partnership with the ATI announced the BRIGHT platform's translation evaluation leaderboard for a number of languages.

During the seminar and roundtable session, experts and scholars discussed the opportunities and challenges brought by technological transformations, especially generative artificial intelligence.

The 2023 National Translation Technology Contest, which commenced at TAC's 2023 annual conference in April, marked TAC's first event focused on translation technology. 

Aimed at promoting the proactive learning and application of translation technology among professionals, this year's competition attracted nearly 3,000 enthusiasts and learners from over 400 universities, institutions, and companies. Awards were distributed across several categories, including six first prizes, 10 second prizes, 21 third prizes, 51 merit awards, 36 outstanding organizers, and 19 exceptional coaches.
