By Cui Can   |    CICG, July 27, 2023

Eliminating poverty is a shared mission and a major challenge for humanity. China, with a population of 1.4 billion, eradicated absolute poverty in 2020 and is now working to advance rural revitalization across the country. Meanwhile, it wants to share its experience to help in the fight against poverty around the world.

Here are six books from publishers under China International Communications Group that are full of touching stories and valuable lessons, helping readers understand the challenges and triumphs in China's poverty alleviation efforts.

Chinese People, Chinese Dream: The Life Change of Chinese People and Poverty Alleviation

Written by William N. Brown, an American professor who teaches in China's Xiamen University and who has been living in China for decades, the book tells the stories of 14 ordinary Chinese who pursued a better life in the process of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects.

Brown travelled across 26 cities in 18 provincial-level regions, including those with many national-level impoverished counties, such as Tibet autonomous region, Guizhou province, Gansu province, Yunnan province, and Inner Mongolia autonomous region. Through his interviews with these people, the author provides a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs of China's poverty alleviation efforts. The book is published by Foreign Languages Press.

China's Rural Revitalization: The Gansu Experience (English edition)

"China's Rural Revitalization: The Gansu Experience" presents a summary of social and economic development and poverty alleviation in China since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and an account of real-life poverty alleviation and rural revitalization work at the grassroots in Gansu province, central China.

The author, David W. Ferguson, has lived in China for many years and has a deep understanding of the country. The book is based on Ferguson's visits to several villages in Gansu province, a landlocked and mountainous region in central China, where he interviewed the local people about their poverty alleviation and rural revitalization efforts. In this book, Ferguson also provides insights into why China has achieved such remarkable results in reducing poverty and revitalizing the countryside. The book is published by Foreign Languages Press.
