Pilot project launched to nurture professionals of key languages

A pilot project to nurture professionals of key languages was launched in Chongqing during a two-day event from April 7 to 8, drawing over 50 representatives from government, institutions, and schools as well as translation and education experts to discuss the high-quality development of language professionals and the building of national translation capacity.

Liu Dawei, vice president of China International Communications Group (CICG), said the development of professionals of key languages is conducive to the building of national translation capacity and will help to address the talent crunch in some fields of less commonly spoken languages.

Liu called for innovative ideas and measures to nurture language professionals, and pooling strengths of various stakeholders to support international communication.

During the launch event, the Academy of Translation and Interpretation under CICG signed strategic cooperation agreements with Jiangbei, Jiangjin, and Jiulongpo districts of Chongqing municipality as well as Sichuan International Studies University.

A seminar was also held after the ceremony as translation and education experts held discussions around topics such as building synergy among various stages of education to nurture language professionals, and promoting career-oriented education to develop skills and expertise for language learners.
