Ambassador roundtable on poverty reduction held in Nujiang, Yunnan

A roundtable dialogue themed on poverty reduction and global development was held in Nujiang Lisu autonomous prefecture, southwestern China's Yunnan province, on Sunday.

As a supporting event of the 2023 International Forum on Poverty Governance and Global Development, the roundtable gathered officials and well-known experts to discuss China's experience in poverty reduction and introduce its relevance in global development to foreign diplomats.

Li Li, director general of Beijing Service Bureau for Diplomatic Missions, said poverty is the common enemy of all mankind, and called for international cooperation on poverty alleviation.

Hong Weizhi, secretary of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party of China, introduced Nujiang's work to eliminate poverty. He said the prefecture will continue to build on the achievements in poverty reduction, promote rural revitalization, and advance the high-quality development of the region.

Li Xiaoyun, a professor at China Agricultural University, said China's poverty reduction is universally acknowledged as a major contributor to global development. As one of the most populous countries in the world, China has been adopting a people-centered approach in poverty reduction, which provides a useful reference for the rest of the world.

Taking questions from foreign diplomats, Liu Yongfu, former director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said that China and the rest of the world have helped and benefitted each other in reducing poverty. He noted that China learned from the successful poverty reduction practices of inernational aid projects and also shared its own experiences with other countries.

Guo Weimin, president of the China Public Relations Association and former vice minister of the State Council Information Office, said poverty reduction is a large and systematic project that involves the efforts from the government, market players, and rural residents. Guo said that China has invested real efforts to protect the ethnic languages and culture in the process of eliminating poverty.

Yu Tao, vice president of China International Communications Group (CICG), said that, faced with global challenges, the international community needs to work together to promote global poverty reduction and sustainable development. CICG will continue to host more events for international dialogue in order to share China's experience with the rest of the world, he said.

The roundtable event was co-organized by the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies under CICG and Beijing Service Bureau for Diplomatic Missions.
